January 25, 2017 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The nationally-ranked Tennessee men’s and women’s track and field teams are back in action this weekend as they head to the Razorback Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center hosted by Arkansas.
The two-day event will kick off on Friday, Jan. 27 at 11:30 a.m. CT with the heptathlon 60-meter dash. Friday evening’s prime time events, scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, will get underway with the men’s distance medley relay. Saturday’s schedule begins at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s 3000m race. The Razorback Invitational will be streamed live on Saturday from 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET until 4:30 p.m. CT/5:30 p.m. ET. The broadcast will show live events from the Saturday afternoon schedule and featured events from Friday evening.
“We’re heading to Fayetteville for the Razorback Invitational and we are thrilled to get going again,” director of track & field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. “We have had a great training week coming off the Vanderbilt meet to get ready for this meet. This is going to be a highlight of our season thus far and we are preparing to be at our sharpest, for the end of January.”
The no. 15 men’s team and the no. 17 women’s team will face some fierce competition as they take on 13 different schools, including eight opponents ranked in the nation’s top 25 and 10 SEC opponents.
“Arkansas is known for the fastest indoor track in the country and that is because they bring the fastest people to that track,” Alford-Sullivan said. “That’s going to happen again this weekend; we are going to see some fantastic competitions. I plan for the Vols to be right in the thick of it; it should be a great weekend for us.”

Last Time Out
Tennessee posted 11 top-three finishes and two facility records at the Commodore Invitational in Nashville two weeks ago. Over the two-day meet, UT set 23 personal bests. Christian Coleman set the facility record in the 60m dash as he finished in 6.54 seconds in the final after posting a 6.56 mark in the prelims. Coleman earned the SEC men's runner of the week award for his effort at Vanderbilt.
Mustaqeem Williams took second place in the 60m with a time of 6.64 seconds in the finals and a 6.69 mark in the prelims. Both of those marks surpass his previous career best of 6.73, which he set last weekend at the Indiana-Tennessee Dual. Williams moves into a tie for seventh place on the school's career leaderboard. Coleman and Williams recorded the top two times in the NCAA so far this season. Williams also took second place in the 200m as he finished in 21.23.
Coming off her SEC Runner of the Week performance, Shania Collins followed it up with a facility record on her way to winning the 200m dash with a time of 23.70. Lenysse Dyer took fourth place overall with a time of 23.97 and Maia McCoy finished in sixth with a time of 24.10. Collins also took third place in the 60m dash with a time of 7.35, setting a new personal record. McCoy finished in fourth place with a new PR of 7.40.
Ari Cogdell took second place in the 400m race as he finished in 46.89, the fifth-fastest 400m time in school history. It is also the third-fastest time in the country so far this season.
Stamatia Scarvelis finished third in the women's shot put with a throw of 16.31m (53-6.25) as she set a new PR and moved into fifth place on the school's all-time list of PR's. That also moves Scarvelis into a tie for the fifth-best mark in the country so far this year. She has bettered her mark and set a new indoor PR at every meet so far this season. Scarvelis recorded the third best weight throw in school history with a toss of 19.73m (64-8.75).
The women's 4x400m team finished out the event for Tennessee with one of the most impressive performances with a first place finish in 3:39.29. Freshman Brooklynn Broadwater ran a strong first leg to give the Vols the lead and McCoy extended it on the final leg to bring home the victory.
