Vols Down No. 33 UNLV on the Road, 4-1
February 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
LAS VEGAS -- No. 24 Tennessee capped off non-conference play with a 4-1 win over 33rd-ranked UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Sunday.
"As an athlete, you don't always perform your best physically," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We know that, but there is never a reason to not perform excellent mentally. That is what our team did a great job of today. We performed mentally tough against a good UNLV team. I actually think they played better than us, but I'll take our team's fight every day. Our team had a goal, and I am happy to say we have accomplished it. Ty Schaub and I are so proud of our team."
The Volunteers (13-1) dropped the first match in doubles but quickly picked up wins on Courts 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point.
Seniors Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic got things going with a 7-5 victory. Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck sealed the deal with a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker win, giving UT an early 1-0 lead over the Rebels.
In singles, Ariadna Riley kicked things off with a win against Paola Artiga, 6-2, 6-3, on Court 4. Schuck held off a late push by Jovana Kenic to take the match on Court 6, 6-1, 7-5. Johanna Silva clinched the match for Tennessee with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over En-Pei Huang. The wins marked the second of the weekend for each player.
"Regarding this weekend overall, Eve, Brit and Sadie were all undefeated in doubles," Ojeda said. "Jo and Ari were undefeated in singles, and Gabby was MVP, going undefeated in both singles and doubles. I can't say enough about our freshman. Ari put the first point on the board both days in singles, Gabby the got the second and Jo clinched the match both days."
The Vols return return home next week to open up conference play, beginning with Vanderbilt on Friday at 6 p.m. ET at Barksdale Stadium or Goodfriend Tennis Center, pending on the weather.
