March 29, 2017 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee redshirt freshman Nolan Ray has been named the SEC Men's Freshman Golfer of the Week, as announced by the Southeastern Conference office on Wednesday.
Ray is the second Tennessee rookie to earn SEC Men's Freshman Golfer of the Week this season as teammate Rhys Nevin was recognized with the same honors on March 1.
Competing in just his third collegiate tournament, Ray finished fourth in the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on March 21 at even-par 210, just one stroke off tying for the individual title. All three of Ray's rounds counted towards the team score, including an even-par 70 in the first round and a 1-under 69 in the third, as he helped the Vols earn their second team title of the season by one stroke.
Ray tallied nine birdies for the tournament and had a 2.88 (-1) average on par 3s and a 4.00 (-4) on par 5s. His fourth-place finish was the best of his career and his second top 15 finish. On the season, Ray has a 72.77 round average (three tournaments, nine rounds).
The Vols will play their final tournament before the SEC Championship this week as they head to Augusta, Georgia, to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational from April 1-2 at Forest Hills Golf Club.
