COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA -- Stamatia Scarvelis and Candice Butler combined for 10 points in the women's hammer throw, and Seth Whitener secured points in the men's hammer Thursday to pace Tennessee on day one of the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Big Orange also moved along Christian Coleman to the men's 200m final and Shania Collins to the women's 200 final, while Maya Neal put herself within striking distance of points entering the final day of the women's heptathon.
Scarvelis, a sophomore, and Butler, a senior, carded runner-up and seventh-place finishes, respectively, to tally 10 points in the hammer for the UT women at the University of South Carolina's Sheila & Morris Cregger Track. Scarvelis rose from fifth to second on her final throw of the meet, an effort of 209 feet, three inches (63.79m). Butler's best toss was a mark of 193-5 (58.97m), which she registered on her first attempt of the finals to move from ninth to seventh.
In the men's hammer, Whitener cashed in for two points with a toss of 214 feet, 11 inches (65.52m). After opening with a foul, the sophomore carded improvements on his next three attempts. His fourth one proved to be the mark of record, giving him a huge jump from last year's 16th-place outcome at this meet. Senior Cameron Brown wound up 14th with a best measurement of 202-1 (61.60m).
In the men's 200m prelims, Coleman easily won the opening heat in a wind-aided 20.19 with a breeze of 2.3 meters per second at his back. The junior's time stood as the second-fastest of the evening. He'll run for his first SEC Outdoor 200 title on Saturday afternoon and will try to qualify in the 100m prelims on Friday.
Sophomore Mustaqeem Williams just missed joining Coleman in the 200 final, with his wind-aided mark of 20.59 placing 10th in the field and matching his career-fastest effort at last season's NCAA East meet.
In the women's heptathlon, Neal produced personal bests in three of the day's four events to stand in ninth place with 3,226 points. With temperatures nearing 90 degrees during the competition, the sophomore began with a wind-aided (+3.7) time of 14.19 to finish 12th and earn 952 points in the 100-meter hurdles. She would turn it up a notch from there.
Neal netted 724 points and finished 11th with a career-best leap of 5-2.50 (1.59m) in the high jump and followed that with a personal-record toss of 38-9 (11.81m) to finish sixth and grab 649 points in the shot put. She closed day one with her best-ever mark of 24.85 in the 200-meter dash (+1.3), tallying 901 points with the field's seventh-fastest time.
In the women's 200, Collins ran a career-best 22.95 to finish third in heat one. That mark was quick enough to earn the junior the ninth and final qualifying spot for Saturday's final.
Friday's slate for Tennessee includes the final three events (long jump, javelin, 800m) of the women's heptathlon and field event finals in the men's discus and high jump as well as the women's long jump and shot put. On the track for the Vols, prelims are slated for the men's 100m, 400m and 1500m as well as the women's 100m and 400m.
