KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 5 Tennessee capped off an undefeated weekend at the Tennessee Invitational with a 2-0 victory over South Alabama on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Lady Vols (21-1) scored both of their runs in the first inning and never allowed the Jaguars (10-11) to climb back into the game. Caylan Arnold and Matty Moss were effective in the circle, as Arnold (9-0) went four innings with eight strikeouts and picked up the win. Moss struck out four batters while closing out the final three frames and picked up her third save of the season.
In the bottom of the first, UT was able to get runners in scoring position with one out, as Meghan Gregg singled and advanced to second on the throw, which allowed Jenna Holcomb to make it from first to third base. Chelsea Seggern stepped in as the cleanup hitter and did just that, knocking a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and give the home team an early two-run advantage.
The pitchers held it down the rest of the game, as South Alabama recorded just four hits on the day.Â
In the sixth inning, the Jaguars got a runner on first before Kristian Foster hit a soft fly ball down the left field line. With the base runner sprinting around third and heading for home, left fielder Jenna Holcomb made a spectacular diving catch to deny the run and preserve the two-score lead.Â
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols open SEC play next weekend, when they host Missouri for a three-game series at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
