AUBURN, Ala. -- Chelsea Seggern hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to give No. 8/12 Tennessee the deciding run as the Lady Vols earned a 2-1 victory over No. 11/13 Auburn on Friday night at Jane B. Moore Field.
After five scoreless innings, the Lady Vols (33-6, 5-5 SEC) broke through in the top half of the sixth. After Aubrey Leach knocked a leadoff double to left center and advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt, Meghan Gregg grounded out to short to bring her home and give UT the 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers (34-8, 7-6 SEC) would answer in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up, as Courtney Shea led off the frame by blasting a solo home run to right field. With zero outs and momentum on Auburn's side, the Tigers were eyeing a walkoff run, but Matty Moss answered the pressure by striking out the next three batters to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Leach got things started for Tennessee again with another leadoff double. Scarlet McSwain moved Leach to third by grounding out to shortstop, and after Meghan Gregg grounded to the pitcher, Seggern stepped in with two outs and the go-ahead run 60 feet away. The sophomore then took a 2-1 pitch and drove a base knock up the middle to score Leach and put the Lady Vols ahead once again.
Moss shut down the Tigers' final efforts in the bottom half of the eighth to give UT the series-opening win. With 2.2 innings in relief, she recorded four strikeouts and earned the winning decision to improve to 15-2 for the season. Moss and starter Caylan Arnold held Auburn to just four hits on the night.
Kaylee Carlson (16-2) went all eight innings for Auburn, notching three strikeouts while giving up seven hits.
