Lady Vols Welcome Tennessee Tech and UAB
October 17, 2019 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee softball heads into its penultimate weekend of fall ball with a Saturday-Sunday slate at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
On Saturday, with plenty of time to see some Lady Vols softball live and get home to watch the football game (9 p.m. on ESPN), UT hosts Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. (ET), before concluding the weekend with a 2 p.m. matchup against UAB on Sunday.
Admission is free and gates will open to the public beginning one hour prior to each game of the day. Normal concession stands will not be open; however, fans will be allowed and are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks (alcohol is not permitted).
The Lady Vols hold a 21-0 series lead over the Golden Eagles who they last faced in the 2017 regular season when UT won 10-0.
UT's matchup with UAB is not as longstanding with just three previous meetings between the programs. In that time, the Lady Vols have outscored the Blazers 27-1, picking up every win. Tennessee also posted a 10-run shutout against UAB in their last faceoff in 2016.
Last weekend, UT found victories over Middle Tennessee State (12-1) and Duke (9-7). After being down, 6-1 to the Blue Devils, the Lady Vols posted seven runs in the final two innings to win 9-7. The comeback was kicked off by a leadoff dinger from freshman Amanda Curran to spur a scoring frenzy in the bottom of the 10th inning, while classmate Kiki Milloy blasted a two-run shot that sustained the Lady Vols momentum for the remainder of the contest.
UT's freshman class lived up to the hype last weekend, coming into the year ranked the sixth-best recruiting class by Softball America.
The Lady Vols return ace Ashley Rogers who finished 2019 with a 1.94 ERA and 21-7 record in the circle and the bulk of its offensive fire power. Despite the loss of All-American Aubrey Leach who was the lone player to start all 60 games, UT is poised for a strong season at the plate bringing back 70 percent of its scoring and eight starters.
Last season, the Lady Vols finished 43-17 and were one-run shy of returning to the Women's College World Series after a closely-contested showing with the Florida Gators in the Gainesville Super Regional. The Lady Vols forced a rubber match into extra-innings before the Gators singled for the walk-off win.
