No. 9 Lady Vols Edged by No. 17/18 Ole Miss, 4-1
April 27, 2019 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 9 Lady Vols were led by a 3-for-3 effort from junior Cailin Hannon on Saturday, but a seventh-inning rally that broke up the Ole Miss shutout was cut short by a diving grab in foul territory to preserve the series win for the Rebels.
Caylan Arnold earned the start for UT and was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. She had all four of Tennessee's strikeouts in the outing. Matty Moss was called on in relief and went on to toss 1.0 shutout frame.
Ole Miss struck first in the game, scoring three runs in the opening stanza to take a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back singles put runners on base before two passed balls allowed Kylan Becker to score. Jessica Puk then doubled to right-center field, scoring two after a walk put runners on first and third.
Tennessee had a runner reach via a walk in the first, but it wasn't until Hannon's single over second base in the third inning that the Lady Vols recorded a hit. She moved into scoring position on a 5-3 groundout before the frame ended on two outs to the left side.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Vols threatened again as Gracie Osbron reached on a fielder's choice back to the circle. She moved to second on a single to center before a flyout was recorded for the third out.
The Rebels added an insurance run in the sixth on a Brittany Finney double after the leadoff batter walked, giving Ole Miss a 4-0 advantage.
Answering in the seventh, Tennessee broke up the shutout as Hannon hit an RBI single up the middle to trim the Rebels' lead, 4-1. Kaitlin Parsons first reached on a fielder's choice to second. The freshman then moved into scoring position on Madison Pacini's single to left, bringing Hannon to plate with two outs. Down to her last strike, Hannon sent a one-bagger up the middle to score Parsons from second. Ole Miss then ended the Lady Vols' rally on a diving catch in foul territory in the next at-bat.
ON DECK: Tennessee looks to take one game from the Rebels in the Sunday series finale. The 3 p.m. EST game will be aired on ESPNU and a live radio broadcast will be available on AM 990. UTSports.com and the Tennessee Gameday App will also carry a live radio stream.
