Mertena Wins Two at USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight
September 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. –The Tennessee women's tennis team wrapped up day one of the USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight on Friday. Highlighting the event in Orlando was sophomore Rebeka Mertena, who went undefeated in singles play.
"Overall, I'm pleased with how our girls approached today," said assistant coach Jarryd Chaplin. "The competition is quality and I think we did a pretty good job of embracing it. Doubles was disappointing for the girls today, but the response in singles was encouraging. They will get another shot at doubles on Sunday and I know they'll be excited for that. I'm looking forward to seeing how they back up today's effort when they compete tomorrow."
Mertena started off the day with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win to open singles play. In her second match, she won in two sets (6-2, 6-1).
Tenika McGiffin won her first singles match of the day in two sets, but fell in her second match in two sets.
Johanna Silva fell in her first match 6-4, 6-4 and came back to win her second match 6-1, 6-1 on the backstage.
