#13/20 Vols Bounce Back with 5-3 Over Arizona State

ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 13/20 Tennessee found itself back in the win column after defeating Arizona State, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Globe Life Field.
The Volunteers (7-3) used a four-run second inning to jump out to an early lead and were able to hold off the Sun Devils (8-3) late to improve to 1-1 at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series.
Henry Ford and Blaine Brown both had a pair of hits and an RBI while Chris Newstrom continued his productive weekend with a big two-run double to open the scoring.
Levi Clark also had a double and drove in an important insurance run with a deep sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to give the Big Orange a 5-3 lead after ASU had battled back to cut the deficit to one run.
UT also got solid performances all around on the mound from the trio of Landon Mack, Brady Frederick and Cam Appenzeller.
Mack put together a gritty outing, striking out five while allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings and working out of a few jams along the way to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the year.
Frederick tossed two solid innings in relief of Mack, allowing just one unearned run on one hit before handing the ball off to the freshman Appenzeller, who struck out three over the final two innings to hold the Sun Devils scoreless and pick up his first-career save.
Dean Toigo led Arizona State at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Starting pitcher Colin Linder fell to 0-1 on the year after giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over four innings.
UP NEXT: The Vols will look to secure a winning weekend on Sunday afternoon when they wrap up their stay in Arlington with a matchup against Virginia Tech. First pitch against the Hokies is slated for 11:30 a.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on FloCollege.com.
