March 01, 2026 | Men's Golf
LOS CABOS, Mexico – The No. 18/20 Tennessee men's golf team began its second tournament of the spring on Sunday at the Cabo Collegiate, with round one contested at Twin Dolphin Golf Club.
The Vols fired an even-par 284 in round one to sit in the middle of the pack in eighth place among the 15 teams competing. Tennessee trails current leader No. 11 Oklahoma State by just four strokes ahead of Monday's second round, after the Cowboys recorded a 4-under-par 280. No. 7 Arizona State and No. 9 Arkansas are tied for second place in Cabo at 3-under-par.
Bruce Murphy posted Tennessee's best countable score on Sunday, tallying a 2-under-par 69 to be one of two Vols tied for 11th place among 80 individual golfers after round one. The reigning SEC Golfer of the Week continued his hot streak with four birdies on his first 11 holes of the day, before two minor bogey setbacks to close the round.
Another Vol who carried positive momentum through round one was Chase Kyes, who is tied with Murphy for 11th place after carding a 2-under-par 69 of his own. The freshman, competing outside of the team lineup as an individual this week, tallied three birdies on Sunday to just one bogey, which came on his final hole of the day. Kyes now has three consecutive rounds in the 60s to open the inaugural spring season of his collegiate career.
With Tennessee's joint-best individual scores, Murphy and Kyes trail the individual lead by five strokes. California's Ziqin Zhou holds a three-stroke advantage at the top after firing an impressive 7-under-par 64 on Sunday.
Jackson Herrington notched his tenth round of par or better this season on Sunday after an up-and-down round that ended with an even-par 71. The sophomore came out of the gate hot, with birdies on two of his opening six holes. After recording three bogeys in a four-hole stretch on the back nine, Herrington recovered with a birdie on hole No. 15 to escape with an even-par round, tied for 25th place individually.
Josh Hill and Luke Smith earned the final two scores countable toward the Tennessee team total on Sunday, both carding 1-over-par rounds of 72. Hill opened the day with adversity, a double bogey on hole No. 1, which he recovered from strongly with three birdies on the day. Smith was able to offset a tally of one bogey and one double bogey with two birdies of his own. The pair is tied for 33rd place entering Monday's second round.
The Cabo Collegiate will resume on Monday morning, with a shotgun start set for 10:30 a.m. EST.
