May 01, 2026 | Women's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 19 University of Tennessee women's tennis team (14-9, 8-7 SEC) defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs (13-6), 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships Friday at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
"We train to be able to make adjustments when we need to," Tennessee head coach Alison Ojeda said, "and our girls did an incredible job of doing just that today."
With the victory, Tennessee now holds a 36-20 record all-time at NCAA tournament regional sites and have advanced to the round of 32 for the seventh consecutive season.
The Lady Vols opened the match strong by carding doubles wins on courts one and two to secure a 1-0 advantage. Tennessee's No. 21 nationally ranked duo of Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso cruised to a 6-1 set win on court two. After holding serve in the opening two games, the senior partnership took the next five games to secure the set lead.
Francesca Mattioli and Vanesa Suarez, manning court one for Tennessee, logged a 6-3 win to seal the doubles point. The pair earned a break to take a 4-2 lead and held serve to close the set.
In singles play, Tennessee earned straight-sets victories on courts one, four and five to take the match.
Tennessee's No. 11 Katrina Scott earned a quick win on court one to give Tennessee a 2-0 lead. After going up a break to 4-2 in her first set, Scott then delivered seven straight games to lead 5-0 in the second. The competitors held serve, and the Lady Vols' first team All-SEC selection iced the 6-2, 6-1 decision.
Mattioli followed suit, delivering a 6-3, 6-3 decision on court five to give the Lady Vols a 3-0 edge. In both of her sets, the Monarchs' Lidiia Rasskouskaia took a 3-1 advantage, and the Lady Vol sophomore tallied five straight winning games to take the frame.
Old Dominion, now on the brink of elimination, earned each of the next two points, earning singles victories on courts six and three.
Tennessee's No. 87 Suarez, though, handed her team the win with a 7-5, 6-1 decision on court four. Her opponent, ODU's Marina Markina, opened to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Suarez countered by winning four straight games to take a 5-4 advantage and earned another break to post a 7-5 first frame. The second stanza was a masterclass from Suarez, as she won 84 percent of her service points, while her opponent won just 44 percent.
