Appenzeller Earns Invite to USA Baseball CNT Training Camp
May 22, 2026 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee standout pitcher Cam Appenzeller has received an invite to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp this summer.
Appenzeller has had an impressive true freshman season for the Volunteers, compiling a 6-1 record with a 4.89 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 18 appearances, including two starts. The talented left-hander also has a save to his name and has totaled 59 strikeouts over 53.1 innings pitched.
The Chatham, Illinois, native, quickly stood out as one of UT's most talented arms early in the season and wasted no time making a name for himself in conference play. Appenzeller began league play with four straight scoreless relief outings and posted 21.2 consecutive shutout innings before surrendering his first run in an SEC contest.
Four of Appenzeller's six wins have come against SEC foes, including earlier this week in the first round of the SEC Tournament against South Carolina when he earned his first start against a conference opponent. The SEC All-Freshman Team selection held the Gamecocks to three runs and finished with five strikeouts over five innings of work.
Appenzeller is the 21st Tennessee player and the seventh pitcher to be associated with the USA Baseball CNT, joining the likes of program legends Todd Helton, R.A. Dickey, Chris Burke, Luke Hochevar, Drew Gilbert, Drew Beam and Christian Moore, among others.
The Collegiate National Team kicks off a busy summer schedule with three days of doubleheaders between June 27-29, as the Stars and Stripes teams will play three games apiece against teams from the Appalachian Summer League.
The annual Team USA Stars vs. Stripes Series will begin on June 30 at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The next three games will be held at the National Training Complex July 1-3, and the series will return to Segra Stadium on July 4 for the finale. The annual five-game Stars vs. Stripes series is a product of the Collegiate National Team Training Camp that features 56 of the premier non-draft-eligible collegiate players in the country.
The USA Baseball CNT, which will be named on July 5 following the conclusion of Training Camp, will then compete in the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship at Taichung City Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taichung City, Taiwan, from July 11-15.
The United States, Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) and Japan University Baseball Federation (JUBF) recently announced the institution of this event, which will bring together four teams for a five-day tournament and provide a significant addition to the global baseball calendar at the collegiate level.
