Lady Vols Sit in Second Place Through 36 Holes of Canadian Collegiate Invitational

AURORA, Ontario – The Tennessee women's golf team began its second tournament of the fall season on Monday, playing the opening 36 holes of the Canadian Collegiate Invitational at Beacon Hall Golf Club.
The conditions North of the border proved to be difficult for a majority of the 11-team field over the first two rounds of the tournament, with many high scores over par. Tennessee opened the day with a 7-over-par 295, before improving with a 4-over-par 292 in round two. At 11-over-par, the Lady Vols are alone in second place.
Virginia was the lone team to excel on international soil over the opening 36 holes. The Cavaliers hold a 20-stroke advantage atop the team standings at 9-under-par. Virginia's consecutive rounds under par on Monday were the only two under par by any team in the event thus far. In the race for second place, Tennessee is five strokes ahead of Auburn, who sit in third place at 16-over-par entering Tuesday's final round.
Five of the six competitors on the course for the Lady Vols on Monday concluded the day within the individual top-15, including three in the top-10.
Sofie Engesæth led the Tennessee team lineup with an even-par 36-hole score. The senior from Oslo, Norway, bounced back from a 1-over-par 73 in the day's opening round with a 1-under-par 71 in round two. Engesæth's tally of seven birdies across two rounds propelled her to a tie for fifth place with 18 holes remaining. She is one of just eight players with an overall score of even par or better through 36 holes, trailing the individual lead by six strokes.
Despite competing outside the team lineup as an individual, Madison Messimer matched Engesæth for the low 36-hole score by a Lady Vol. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Year also holds a tally of even-par, shooting a 1-under-par 71 in round one and a 1-over-par 73 in round two. Also tied for fifth place, Messimer's four bogeys were tied for the fourth-least among the 60-golfer field on Monday.
After struggling to a 7-over-par 79 in round one, Kyra Van Kan bounced back with Tennessee's best score of the day in round two. The junior All-American fired a 3-under-par 69 to close the second round at an overall tally of 4-over-par. Van Kan's 69 was one of just five rounds in the 60s and matched the lowest single-round score by any player in the field across rounds one and two. She is tied for tenth place ahead of round three on Tuesday.
Sophie Christopher and Martina Lopez-Lanchares round out the five Lady Vols in the top-15 through two rounds. Christopher sits alone in 14th place at 5-over-par, firing an even-par 72 in round one before a 5-over-par 77 in round two. Her four bogeys across 36 holes match Messimer for the fourth-least among the tournament field. Lopez-Lanchares fired back-to-back 3-over-par rounds of 75. At 6-over-par overall, she is tied for 15th place with 18 holes to play.
Tennessee will conclude the Canadian Collegiate Invitational with round three on Tuesday at Beacon Hall Golf Club. The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. ET.
