Sam Black joined Tennessee soccer as the Director of Soccer Performance in 2025.Â
In the team's first season with Black on staff in 2025, the Lady Vols reached the NCAA Tournament after a historic regular season featuring the program's first ever No. 1 ranking and first ever win over No. 1 ranked opponent. UT closed the season with a 12-4-3 record, suffering just two regular season defeats, as two Lady Vols earned All-American honors and four received All-SEC recognition.
Black joined the the Lady Vols from St. Louis CITY SC of Major League Soccer, where he served as a performance coach with MLS side St. Louis CITY SC and St. Louis City SC 2, the club's MLS Next Pro affiliate.Â
Throughout his time there, St. Louis CITY SC 2 notched a fifth-place finish and postseason playoff berth (2023) and a second-place finish and conference championship in 2024. Additionally, Black aide in the development of several academy players who have gone on to gain first team experience and youth national team caps.Â
Prior to joining St. Louis CITY, Black served as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Marshall University. He was a member of Marshall’s 2020 NCAA National Staff of the Year, after helping Marshall to the National Championship title that year.
Additionally, Black had stints at Vanderbilt and Texas in various strength and conditioning internship roles.
On top of his time at Vanderbilt, Black spent time in the mid-state from 2013-16, as he played collegiately for Belmont and then served as a graduate assistant and strength coach .
