Knoxville, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers climbed back to the .500 mark with a 16-10 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats before a season-high crowd of 1417 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Tennessee won its fourth straight game to improve to 17-17 overall and 4-7 in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky dropped its sixth consecutive league game to fall to 2-9 in the SEC and 12-17 overall.
It was the first SEC series win of the season for the Volunteers who go for the sweep Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
Eight Wildcat errors led to their demise as four miscues in the first two innings pushed the Volunteers to a 7-1 lead. Trailing 1-0, Tennessee plated two in the bottom of the first on two misplays and five in the second as they pounded out six hits.
Kentucky rallied with four runs in the fourth, keyed Seth Morris' ninth home run of the season and Spencer Graeter's three-run double to pull within 7-5.
Morris and Graeter were a two-man wrecking crew for Kentucky as they collected seven hits and combined to drive in six runs. Graeter, who left the game in the sixth with a sore hamstring, went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the Wildcats.
Tennessee kept its hot bats going as it scored eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings in grabbing a 15-8 lead. The Vols added two in the fourth on singles by Walter Sevilla and Hal Bibee, two more in the fifth on two sacrifice flies and four in the sixth on a two-run single by Javi Herrera, a Jordan Czarniecki double and the sixth Kentucky error.
Sevilla scored four runs as one of three Vols to collect three hits on the day. Joining him were Ryan Moffett and Javi Herrera who each doubled twice. Czarniecki drove in a team-high three runs for the Vols.
Kentucky put three more on the board in the sixth as they pulled to within 11-8. They plated their final two runs in the eighth on one of four Tennessee errors and a base hit by Robert Newton who had two RBI.
Patrick Hicklen (5-3) got the win as he gave up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Beau Massey picked up his first career save as he logged the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs with four strikeouts.
Scott Wade (3-6) took the loss as he was tagged for nine runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Craig Snipp and Rob Corrado faired little better as they were roughed up for seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
