Cumberlands dual meet
Coming off the Orange and White meet, the men's swimming and diving team was looking for a better and more intense focus heading into their first competitive meet in their new facility. The look of determination on senior swimmer Greg Houchin's face as he led the team onto the pool deck spoke volumes about the focus of the Tennessee Volunteers as they began the regular season against NAIA opponent University of the Cumberlands. The Vols were well prepared for the Patriots as they won six of the meet's seven events and inaugurated the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center with a 77-52 win.
UT started the day with a first and second place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Forrest Leary earned his first dual meet win competing in the 200 yard freestyle followed in second place by fellow sophomore Scott Friderichs. Chris Winchell also earned his first dual meet win in the 50 yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Patrick Beasley, senior Scott Wherry, and junior Jordan Walters all had wins on the day in the 100 yard individual medley, 50 yard butterfly and 50 yard backstroke, respectively.
Louisville dual meet
Only 90 minutes after the closing laps of their first meet, the Vols began their second against the University of Louisville. The Vols continued to dominate the pool with a 185-113 win.
Senior and 2008 Olympian Jonas Perrson had a stellar performance in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events.
Gaining the first win of his collegiate career, freshman Jake Epperson beat out teammates Brad Craig and Mattias Kahlin in the 200 yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Geoff Sanders, coming off a standout three win performance in the inter-squad meet last week, continued to finish near the top of the leader board. Sanders fought Louisville's Shane Lichtenberg in the distance events, placing second to him in the 1000 yard freestyle and beating Lichtenberg for the win in the 500 yard freestyle.
Like Sanders, freshman diver Ryan Helms built off an outstanding Orange and White meet performance to capture a win in the diving events today. Helms was joined by junior Michael Muscari and freshman and Knoxville-native Brent Sterling as the Vols rounded out the top three.
Other winners on the day were Brad Craig- 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard individual medley, Barry Murphy- 50 yard freestyle and Michael DeRocco- 100 yard butterfly.
"It was a great day in Tennessee," said head swimming coach John Trembley. "Anytime you start in a brand new complex like this you hope for the best, and today the best did happen. Tennessee swimming and diving is 2-0."
