Women’s Tennis Central: NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 15-ranked Tennessee women's makes its 28th NCAA Tournament appearance on Friday when it takes on James Madison in Charlottesville, Virginia.
First serve between the Lady Vols (16-8) and the Dukes (14-3) from the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar's Head Resort is slated for noon ET.
On the other side of the Charlottesville Regional, host school and No. 14 seed Virginia (14-6) faces Long Island University (9-0) at approximately 3 p.m. ET. The winners of the two Friday matches face off in the Round of 32 on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. The winner of the four-school regional advances to next weekend's Round of 16.
Due to health and safety considerations, in addition to the current guidelines for sports venues set by the Commonwealth of Virginia, attendance for the NCAA Championship matches will be limited to guests of participating student-athletes and coaching staffs. Tickets will not be available to the general public.

No. 80-ranked junior Rebeka Mertena was named to the SEC Women's Tennis All-Tournament Team.
No Strangers to the Tournament: Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Alison Ojeda, the Lady Vols have not missed an NCAA Tournament since the LVFL took over the program in 2016. Friday marks the fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance for Ojeda's Lady Vols after the 2020 postseason was canceled due to the COVID-19 global health crisis.
All-SEC: Juniors Daria Kuczer and Mertena garnered Second Team All-SEC honors for their efforts during the 2021 season.
Kuczer, a Szczecin, Poland native, has been impressive in her debut season on Rocky Top. The transfer by way of Pepperdine has accrued an impressive 19-2 record in dual-match play this season and is 10-1 against conference opponents including an astounding 12-match winning streak against SEC opponents.
Hailing from Liepaja, Latvia, Mertena has been solid for the Lady Vols in the No. 1 singles position where she holds a 4-2 record. The 2019 SEC All-Freshman Team selection is 11-6 in dual-match play this season and has totaled 15 solo wins on the year.
In the Record Books: Senior Johanna Silva claimed her 87th career win last week against No. 10 LSU to tie her in 14th place in career solo wins in Lady Vol History.
The senior has been stout in her curtain call on Rocky Top posting an 9-4 record in dual match play and an impressive 8-1 mark against SEC opponents.
