Rowing Central: Tennessee Hosts Inaugural SEC Championship
May 10, 2025 | Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – History will be made on Melton Hill Lake Sunday morning as the fourth-ranked Tennessee rowing team serves as the host of the first-ever SEC Rowing Championship. The Lady Vols will compete against No. 2 Texas, No. 24 Oklahoma and Alabama in Oak Ridge. Admission is free for all fans.
Â
All six championship races will follow a finals-only format, with one boat per school entered in each event. Racing will begin at 9:05 a.m. ET and progress every 15 minutes, culminating with the first varsity eight at 10:20 a.m. The awards ceremony will follow, beginning at approximately 10:50 a.m.
The Oak Ridge Rowing Association (697 Melton Lake Dr, Oak Ridge, TN 37830) serves as the host site for the inaugural event. The venue has more than 30 miles of well-sheltered and calm water with fully buoyed 7-lane, 2,000 meter racecourses for sprint races. Located 17 miles below Norris Dam, the Oak Ridge Rowing venue is the beneficiary of the reservoir, using the straight and sheltered area at the northeast City limit for its sprint racecourse since 1978. Oak Ridge Rowing Association installed an additional 13.5-meter wide racing lane on the waterway in February and March 2017 as part of the official venue for larger regattas.
Â
Tennessee has already raced twice on Melton Hill Lake this season, versus Stanford on March 29 and during its Rocky Top Invite championship April 4-5. Sunday's championship event will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
 Â
Each race is a 2000-meter sprint, with teams accumulating points across all six events to determine the overall conference champion.
