#19 Lady Vols Set for Clash with Old Dominion in NCAA First Round

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 19 University of Tennessee women's tennis team (13-9, 8-7 SEC) will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship Friday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
"This team, at every single spot, just needs to show up and be as good as they can be," Tennessee head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We need to go out there and compete at every single spot, and if we can do that, then, then we can make a good run."
The Lady Vols will be joined in the Durham Regional by Old Dominion, the VCU Rams and the Duke Blue Devils, which will serve as the Durham Regional's host team. The first-round matchups of the 64-team, single-elimination tournament will begin May 1. The two victors will play in the regional final on Saturday, May 2, at 4 p.m. ET

The Monarchs (13-5) enter Friday's contest as ITA's No. 58-ranked squad and are coming off a fourth-straight Sun Belt Conference championship. ODU is making its seventh-straight NCAA tournament appearance, going 4-2 in its last six appearances in the first round of the tournament. The Monarchs had four straight first round wins from 2021-2024. In 2025, the team fell 4-1 to Florida Atlantic in the first round.
The Monarchs have one ranked singles entry, No. 100 Kira Matushkina, who sports a 5-6 singles record this dual season, with all five of her wins coming in her last seven decisions.
NCAA Championship History
The at-large tournament berth marked the 33rd all-time selection to the NCAA championship field for Tennessee. Tennessee has been selected for the NCAA tournament in each of the last nine full seasons (no tournament in 2020), dating back to 2017. All nine appearances in the current streak have come under the guidance of Ojeda, who has never failed to reach the NCAA Tournament field in her tenure on Rocky Top.
The Lady Vols' 33 all-time selections have all come since 1989, including 20 consecutive selections from 1995-2014.
Tennessee has advanced to the round of 16 or better on 14 occasions, including each of the last three seasons. The Lady Vols have reached the NCAA Quarterfinals on four occasions including each of the last two seasons, and have reached the final four in 2002 and 2024.
The Lady Vols hold a 44-32 record in NCAA Tournament play, including a 35-20 record at regional sites.
